This first year serves two purposes. Firstly, to prepare students for the competitive exams of the «Grandes Ecoles» (Fine Arts, Decorative Arts, specialised art schools in Paris and in the rest of France). Secondly, this first year serves as a probationary/ pre-optional year for the students of the Académie.

It takes into account the specialisation of each art school the students wish to apply to. During the year, each student is given help with compiling a dossier or portofolio, tailor-made according to the exam the student wishes to take. The probationary year constitutes a pre-specialisation year for those students who will go on to higher education at the Académie, whether in interior design and design or in visual communication.
